Gators Take Bite Out of Toros' Winning Streak

Monay Lee led all scorers with 17 points, but it wasn't enough as CSUDH dropped tonight's game against the Gators

SAN FRANCISCO -- Coming off an emotional win in which the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team forged a dramatic comeback win last Saturday, the Toros were unable to duplicate that effort in suffering a 66-53 loss at San Francisco State tonight, snapping CSUDH's four-game win streak.

The Toros fall to 14-5, 10-5 CCAA, and into a three-team tie for second place after Chico State and Cal State L.A. picked up wins tonight.

For the second game in a row, the Toros got off to a frigid start, making just nine field goals while shooting just 26.5% in the first 20 minutes of play.  Luckily, the Gators made just one more field goal en route to a 26-23 lead at the break.

After intermission, the two teams went in opposite directions shooting wise as the Toros stayed cold at 28.6% while SFSU heated up from the field, sinking 52.2% of its shots to open up a double-figure lead with just 7:20 elapsed in the frame.

The lead hit as much as 19 at 54-35 at the 8:56 mark, before a pair of free throws by Breanne Garcia cut CSUDH's deficit to 56-42 two minutes later, and to single digits at 58-49 with 3:38 to go.

SFSU, however, withstood the Toro charge and pulled away in regulation en route to the 13-point win.

Garcia finished with 132 points while the Toros out-rebounded the Gators by 13, but six more makes at the line for the Gators played a big part in the win as the teams split the regular season series.

CSUDH will look to salvage the weekend road trip at Sonoma State tomorrow night, after the Seawolves fell to Cal State L.A. earlier.
