Baseball Survives Opener At Academy of Art in 6-4 Win

Box Score

OAKLAND -- Cruising with a 6-1 lead entering the bottom of the ninth, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team survived a 3-run rally by host Academy of Art in taking the opening game of a four-game set by a 6-4 count.  David Haerle (pictured) earned the win after 5.1 innings and 9 strikeouts, while Peter Ives was the offensive hero with a 2-3, 3RBI performance.

The Toros improve to 2-1 while handing the Urban Knights their first loss of the year in four games.

After the hosts were able to put up the game's lone run over the first four innings, CSUDH tied the game in the 5th on the first Ives RBI, driving in David Steinger who walked to lead off the frame and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Yallen.

The Toros took the lead for good one inning later as three one-out walks set the table for Ives, who roped a single to drive home two runs on a 1-2 pitch, good for a 3-1 lead before adding a single run in the 7th on a Nick Wagner sacrifice fly to score Kamran Young, and two in the 9th on two hits and a costly AAU error.

Up 6-1, Bubby Rossman came in in relief, but AAU benefited from a lead-off single, two wild pitches and two walks to load the bases with none out, signaling reliever Brennan Bernardino from the bullpen.

Bernardino walked the first batter he faced on five pitches, but induced a fielder's choice in exchange for another run to make the score 6-3.

After an RBI single to make the score 6-4, Bernardino settled in and induced a flyout for the second out, and burned his fifth pitch by pinch-hitter Maclane Brady to preserve the win, and pick up his first save of the year.

Danny Haley picked up two hits to join Ives with multiple baseknocks, while Aaron Gray tossed 2.2 innings of work to get an unofficial hold.

Weather permitting, the teams will try to play two tomorrow, with game one scheduled for 5:30 pm at Laney College.
