Defense the Difference as No. 21 Broncos Take Down Toros in 56-30 Final

Box Score

POMONA -- Ranked third in the first NCAA Region poll of the year, the 21st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos showed how important defense is to a team's success after holding Cal State Dominguez Hills to just 12 second half points en route to a convincing 56-30 decision.

DeShaun Freeman paced the Toros with eight points as CSUDH shot just 21.4% from the floor in the loss, which drops the Toros to 7-19, 4-15 CCAA.

The 30 points is the fewest points scored by the Toros since Cal Poly Pomona held CSUDH to 43 on February 5, 2011 in a six-point setback.

After the hosts scored the first six points of the game and held a seven-point advantage with eight minutes elapsed in the contest, the Toros stayed close until the first half buzzer, with an Everett Turner bucket with just under a minute left accounting for the final scoring as CPP took a 19-18 lead into the break.

The second half, however, was all CPP as the hosts scored the first 10 points of the period before a Justin Sadler free throw moved the Toros from the 18-point mark at 14:34.

The Bronco lead reached 20 at 43-23 with 6:43 left in regulation, topping out at 54-27 before the 26-point final.

CPP's Jordan Faison was the lone player in double-figure scoring with 19, while Moriba DeFreitas pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, and was joined by Bronco Daniel Rodriguez, who grabbed a team-best 10 boards.

As a team, CSUDH made just 12 shots from the field and just two from downtown in the loss.

CSUDH completes its regular season road schedule on Saturday as it travels to Arcata to face Humboldt State at 7:30 pm.
