Steininger Steals Win in Walk-Off Fashion Over Yotes to Open CCAA Series

Box Score

CARSON -- Senior David Steininger stroked an opposite field single with runners on first and second in the bottom of the 10th to push the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros to a come-from-behind 6-5 win over visiting Cal State San Bernardino this afternoon on Toro Field in the opener of the four-game CCAA series.

Steininger's baseknock was his final of four on the day as the senior outfielder enjoyed a sizzling 4-for-5 effort with 2 runs scored, the game-winning RBI and three swipes to push the Toros to 6-2, 1-0 CCAA.

Entering the day at 2-0, starter David Haerle compete in a tough outing that was CSUDH's first league game of the year.

After spotting the opposition to a 1-0 lead, however, three hits in the 3rd tied the game on a Bubby Rossman RBI infield single.

CSUSB would again take the lead in the 5th as a passed ball and throwing error brought home three runs for a 4-1 lead, only to have Steininger single-handedly cut the Yote lead in half after singling to lead off the frame, swiping second and third, and scoring on a Danny Haley sacrifice fly.

The Toros pushed across single runs in the 8th and 9th to tie the game, but missed a golden opportunity to plate a second run in the 8th after a suicide squeeze play went awry.

Steininger, however, made sure the Cardinal and Gold wouldn't go down in defeat in its CCAA opener, lacing a single to right field to bring home Hayden Maurice, who started the rally with two outs.

Haerle got the no-decision after 6.0 innings of 9-hit ball, allowing just one earned run on the day.

Reliever Brennan Bernardino earned the win after 4.0 innings of work, scattering two hits.

The Yotes went through four pitchers as reliever Kenneth Kissell was tagged with the loss after failing to get out of the 10th.

Maurice added three hits with Haley, Nick Wagner and Brady Conlan all enjoying multi-hit efforts as part of CSUDH's 16-hit attack, with Haley the lone player with two RBI.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow at 2 pm at Toro Field, for game two of the home/away series.
