Baseball Takes Darkness Shortened Nightcap to Salvage Twinbill Split Against Holy Names

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- Newcomer Winston Lavendier tossed 2.2 innings of work in relief, scattering 4 hits with a strikeout to pick up his first win as a Toro in a 4-3 nightcap that was shortened due to darkness.

Fellow newcomer Kamran Young smacked three of the Toro 10 hits in a 3-for-3 performance, with a run scored after CSUDH dropped its 2014 opener by a 6-4 count.

After the Hawks opened the nightcap's 2nd inning with three runs, the Toros knotted the score in the bottom of the 3rd as four hits, including doubles by Young and Hayden Maurice, and two wild pitches contributed to the offensive output.

That's where the game stood until the bottom of the 5th when a fielding error by the Hawks' third baseman allowed Alex Sixtos to reach, where he advanced to 2nd on a single by Adrian Guzman and scored on a Rico Pena RBI single to left.

Holy Names mounted a rally in the top of the 6th off Lavendier, but Nick Wagner came in to face two batters to close the inning and pick up the save after the game was called due to darkness.

The opener was a reversal from the nightcap as the Toros plated three runs in their 1st inning at-bat with the big blow coming on a Bubby Rossman 2RBI triple to right-center, with a Peter Ives single cashing him in two batters later.

HNU, however, would answer with four in the 4th and add single runs in the 6th and 7th frames, withstanding a late Toro rally that saw the home team put across a single run in the 8th on a Brady Conlan RBI double to center.

Rossman enjoyed a 3-for-5 effort with Ives chipping in a pair of hits.

Joseph Perez picked up the loss in relief of starter Tyler Mark, tossing 2.2 innings of work and allowing 4 earned runs.

CSUDH takes to San Francisco next week to take on Academy of Art in a four-game set, starting Friday at 1 pm.
