Toros Complete Sweep of Simon Fraser After 79-74 Decision

Box Score BURNABY, British Columbia -- Cal State Dominguez Hills senior Tayler Champion scored a team-best 17 points that included all five makes for CSUDH from downtown as the Toros took a competitive 79-74 win over host Simon Fraser this afternoon to complete a two-game sweep over the Clan in the final game of the 2014 season for both teams.

Now winners of seven-straight, the Toros return to the United States and will have a week off before battling co-CCAA league leader Humboldt State to kick off the new year on January 1, in Arcata.

CSUDH improves to 9-3 overall, while SFU falls to 5-4.

"It was another exciting game and a really good team win with everyone contributing," begins head coach Molly Goodenbour.  "Tayler's first half shooting was a big lift and Kielyn's defense on Chambers was clutch in second half.

"We made free throws down the stretch, and it was really good to see them compete hard and pull out to great wins on road."

The Toros continued their momentum from yesterday's win, taking a 42-35 lead into the break behind Champion's 15 points, all coming from behind the arc.

The score was tied at 16-16 with 11:39 left in the half until the Toros went on an 11-3 run to take an 8-point lead, courtesy of a Breanne Garcia jumper, settling for the 7-point halftime edge.

A Garcia free throw six minutes into the second half gave CSUDH its first double-figure lead at 51-41, with the Toro withstanding a Clan run that saw their lead whittled to just three at 62-59 on a Rachel Fradgley layup in the paint with 9:20 left in regulation.

That's as close as SFU would get until 63 ticks left in the game after another Fradgley bucket brought the Clan to 74-72.

Clutch free throw shooting by Anandi Jimenez with 41 seconds left and by Champion with five ticks remaining, however, sealed the deal to give CSUDH the two-game sweep.

Garcia finished with 16 points, with Rayford adding 13 and Lee 12 in the win.

Unlike yesterday's game, SFU took today's battle of the boards (36 to 33), but CSUDH's defense again was the key, forcing seven more turnovers than they committed that resulted in a 13-8 edge in points off turnovers.

The bench also was huge, with CSUDH tallying a 19-2 advantage as CSUDH capped its first venture into Canada with two key in-region victories.

"It was an overall great experioence for our team, not only winning these two games but also being able to tour downtown Vancouveer and then the Capilano Suspension Bridge."
