Toros Shine at the Stub in 2-0 Win Over Gators

CARSON -- Under the bright lights of the Stub Hub Center's Main Stadium, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team rose to the challenge in a convincing 2-0 win over visiting San Francisco State.

Ali Nazari scored the game winner in the 21st minute to move the Toros to 5-6-1, 3-2 CCAA, while SFSU falls to 5-4, 1-3-1 CCAA.

Spurred by CSUDH President Willie Hagan's inspirational coin flip to precede first kick, the Toros came out with the intensity befitting Stub Hub Center's Main Stadium.

A scoreless game turned quickly at 20:58 as Jose Vaca threaded a needle to a streaking Nazari, who beat SFSU keeper Daniel Boyer on a 50/50 ball and sent his shot home for a 1-0 lead.

That's where it remained until after the half when Pedro Velasquez notched his second assist of the game, this time feeding Jaime Rios, who sent a cross to Daniel Herrera, whose flick lofted over a leaping Boyer and across the line for a 2-nil lead.

The Gators looked to cut into their deficit, but the staunch Toro defense and the combination of starting keeper Chase Gentry and second-half keeper Dylan Roberts shut down all SFSU advances to preserve the shutout win.

Rios led the Toros with 5 shots, with Joey Chica chipping in 3 in the win.

CSUDH will look to keep its momentum going on Sunday as CS Monterey Bay visits Carson for a 2 pm first kick on University Field 1.
