Late-Inning Heroics Push Toros to 8-3 Win at San Francisco State to Open CCAA Series

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO -- Senior Sean Wardour tossed 7.2 innings with just one earned run allowed, and 2RBI singles by Ivory Thomas in the 8th and David Steininger in the 9th fueled a 7-run outburst as Cal State Dominguez Hills took an 8-3 decision over host San Francisco State to open the key CCAA series.

With the win, CSUDH improves to 17-17, 13-12 CCAA.

The Toros played catch-up from the start as the Gators plated the game's first run on a miscue in the 1st, and then re-took the lead in the 4th with a pair of unearned runs after a Danny Haley RBI double knotted the game at 1-1 in the 2nd.

That would be as good as it would get for the hosts, however, as Wardour retired the side in order in the 5th and 6th, and hit a batter to spoil a perfect 7th.

CSUDH benefited from Wardour's strong outing by taking the lead for good in the 8th with 4 runs, the big blows coming on Thomas' 2RBI baseknock, an RBI groundout by Fernando Gallegos and a Gator error for the 4th run.

The Toro offense continued their output one inning later as an Alex Sixtos suicide squeeze brought home Carlos Avila, with Sixtos and Hayden Maurice coming home on Steininger's single one batter later.

The bullpen of Matt Montgomery and Taylor Johnson put the clamps on any would-be SFSU rally, combining for a single hit and two Ks in 1.1 innings of work while Steininger and Avila led CSUDH with two hits apiece.

Wardour fanned 6 against 3 walks to improve to 6-3 overall.

The two teams hook up again tomorrow morning for an 11 am double-header, with Sunday's game four also slated for an 11 am start.
