Baseball Drops Two to No. 11 Chico State

CARSON -- Visiting and 11th-ranked Chico State benefited from both solid hitting and pitching in taking 12-6 and 3-1 wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills today to take a 3-0 series lead with the finale set for tomorrow at 11 am.

Spencer Maxey went 3-for-4 with 3RBI in the opening-game loss as the Toros drop to 3-5, 0-3 CCAA.  The Wildcats, meanwhile, stay perfect at 7-0, 3-0 CCAA.

The opener looked promising after the Toros scored four runs in the first inning, with a Tony McClendon 2RBI single and Maxey 2RBI single accounting for the runs.

Chico State quickly answered, however, tying the game after a single run in the 3rd followed three in the 2nd.

CSUDH regained the lead on another Maxey RBI baseknock in the 3rd, before the Wildcats took the lead for good with back-to-back RBI triples for two of the three runs in the 4th, adding single runs in the the 5th and 8th, and 3 more in the 9th to put the game away.

The two teams combined for 29 hits in the 3 hour, 45 minute contest, with each squad using four pitchers.

Luke Barker picked up the win after 4.0 innings of relief, while Kevin Brown took the loss after 3.0 innings of work, allowing 6 earned runs.

Chris Allen and Jordan Yallen added a pair of hits, with Cody Slader leading CSUC with his 4-for-3, 3RBI effort, aided by a trio of Wildcats knocking two hits as well.

The nightcap saw the Wildcats take an early 3-0 lead after two, on three RBI singles.

Wildcat starter Troy Neiman enjoyed a no-hitter until Alex Sixtos broke it up with a single in the 5th, the first of four CSUDH would earn in the game.

CSUDH got on the board in the 6th after Fernando Gallegos reached on a fielder's choice with the bases juiced.

David Haerle took the loss after an inning of work, wtih Dimitri De la Fuente tossing 6.0 innings of relief, scattering 7 hits.

The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow morning at 11 am, with former Major Leaguer and Hall of Famer Don Buford throwing out the first pitch.
