Toros Triple Fun in 58-52 Win Over Point Loma Nazarene

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills gave itself a post-Thanksgiving treat as three Toros scored in double figures to lead CSUDH to a 58-52 win over Point Loma Nazarene in game one of the CSULA Thanksgiving Classic.  Amber Wharton led the Toros with 15 points while two different Toros earned a double-double in the victory.

With the win, CSUDH picks up its first decision of the year to improve to 1-1.

The Sea Lions started on a 10-4 run to open the game until a Wharton triple started a 12-0 push to give CSUDH the lead and control of the game, with a Monay Lee layup with 3:43 left in the half giving the Toros their largest lead of the half at 24-16.

PLNU, however, ended the half the way it began and tied the score at 24-24 on a pair of Jessica Escorza free throws, until a Breanne Garcia jumper with :03 left gave CSUDH a 26-24 lead entering the break.

The two teams kept within three points of each other after intermission, until a Kielyn Wilson bucket tied the contest at 34-34, spurring a 12-2 run that was capped by a Wharton three for the game's biggest lead at 46-36 with 11:08 left in regulation.

A Taylor Champion trey six minutes later again gave CSUDH a 10-point lead, this time at 53-43, in the eventual 6-point win.

Lee finished with 14 points and 12 boards, while Champion's 13 point, 13 rebound effort rounded out the two Toro double-doublers in the game.

The Toros dominated the boards en route to a 46-33 edge, while PLNU amassed 10 more free throw makes in its loss.

CSUDH will continue the second and final day of the CSULA-hosted tournament tomorrow at 2:00 pm, taking on Cal State San Marcos in the Eagles Nest.
