Toros End Skid in Marathon Win at Cal State L.A.

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Coming into tonight's cross-town rivalry match-up having lost 11 straight matches, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team took out its frustrations at Cal State L.A. tonight, and the result was a cathartic 3-2 marathon win that saw the Toros avenge an earlier season sweep by the Golden Eagles in Carson.

Whitney Lee led all players with 17 kills and a .571 hitting percentage in the 25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 17-25, 15-8 win that moved the Toros to 9-17, 2-16 CCAA, the team's first victory since October 4.

The hosts started strong early with the match's first three points, only to have the Toros knot the game at 12-all, and ride Azieanna Smith's serve to a 20-13 lead en route to a 25-21 first set win.

CSULA regrouped to claim a 25-22 win in set two, before the Toros stormed back after the break, turning a 10-8 lead into a 25-15 win, punctuated by an Alijah Gunsaulus hammer on set point.

Down a set, the Golden Eagles returned the favor en route to a convincing 25-17 win, setting up the final frame.

In the fifth, CSUDH duplicated set three's effort by turning a 7-7 tie into a 15-8 runaway, with Jilianne Pineda serving out the final six points in the frame, with CSULA making two unforced errors to account for the match's final two points.

Gunsaulus finished with 16 kills as the Toros hit .262 compared to .178 for the Golden Eagles.

Libero Korryne Kelley tallied 22 digs with Gunsaulus chipping in 10, while Dana Brown posted 47 assists and 8 digs in the marathon.

CSUDH will look to stay in the win column in the final homestand of the year, beginning with Chico State on Friday.
