Host Cougars Too Good for Toros in Sweep

SAN MARCOS -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team ran into a determined Cal State San Marcos squad on the road this afternoon, and the result was a 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 sweep for the Cougars as the Toros suffered their second straight sweep.

Jaidan Alexandar tied for match-high honors at the service line, serving a pair of aces as CSUDH falls to 2-12 overall, and 1-4 in the CCAA.

The Toros hit just .125 for the match while San Marcos enjoyed a .381 hitting percentage, also earning an edge in services aces (6 to 4), blocks (7 to 5), assists (39 to 27) and digs (34 to 24).

After the teams split the opening set's first six points, the Toros kept the score close after trailing 15-13 only to have the Cougars go on a 6-3 run to give them a 21-16 lead.  A kill by Alexander and Rilee Graham service aces brought the Toros to within three points, but the hosts closed the set on a 4-0 run to take the frame.

The two teams went toe to toe in the second set, with the teams tied at 12-12 after a Cougar service error.  That miscue seemed to inspire the hosts as CSUSM scored the next four points, keeping the Toros at arm's length the rest of the set to take a 2-0 lead.

Set three was more of the same as CSUSM rolled to a 10-4 lead early, and turned that into a 17-5 gap that all but put the match away.  CSUDH mounted a late rally on Alexander's serve but it was too little, too late in the sweep.

Alexander also paced the Cardinal and Gold with seven kills en route to leading the squad in three categories.

The road trip doesn't get any easier as the Toros face perennial power and current No. 13 ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night at 7 pm.
