ARCATA -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team suffered its fourth-straight sweep in California Collegiate Athletic Association action, this time coming at the hands of Cal Poly Humboldt.
Natalia Walden-Schulz was the lone Toro in double-figure kills as CPH took the 25-20, 26-24, 25-19 decision.
CSUDH led early in the opening frame before the Jacks turned their 3-4 deficit into a 21-15 lead. Behind kills by
Dakota Carvo and
Rilee Graham, CSUDH got to within 22-20, but the hosts reeled off the final three points of the set to take the opener.
The Toros regrouped in set two, charging to a 4-1 advantage en route to a 16-11 lead after a CPH attack error. That seemed to motivate the hosts as they went on a 4-0 run to get to within 16-15, before two Jack errors gave momentum back to the Cardinal and Gold, leading 18-15.
CSUDH built its lead to 21-17 on an
Anna Sanzaro putaway, only to have the hosts regroup and get to within 22-21 five points later.
The Toros had set point at 24-23 after another Carvo kill, but just like the opener, CPH went on a run to close the set, scoring the final four points to take a commanding two sets to none lead.
The Jacks used that momentum to race to a 12-7 lead in set three, and withstood a mid-set Toro run to take the final set, completing the sweep.
The Toros hit just .155 for the match compared to .267 for the hosts, with a big discrepancy coming at the net where the Jacks enjoyed a 6:1 advantage in blocks.
Carvo added seven kills and Graham six, with Carvo putting up the lone stuff for the Cardinal and Gold.
CSUDH looks get back into the win column on Friday, October 23, hosting Cal State Monterey Bay for a 5 pm first serve.
