Covarrubias Golden in 4-3 Overtime Thriller Over Warriors

Box Score

CARSON -- Junior Alejandro Covarrubias sent a 25-foot screamer that kept elevating, with its final destination of top shelf giving Cal State Dominguez Hills a heart-stopping 4-3 overtime win over a pesky Cal State Stanislaus team that nearly came all the way back from a 3-1 deficit in the Stub Hub Center's Main Stadium.

After Carlos Gavino gave the visitors an early lead by collecting a loose ball and dribbling around Toro starting keeper Markus Dickerson for a 1-0 lead at the 11:32 mark, CSUDH answered with three goals, the first coming on an Aaron Salazar blast from 15 that went far post past Warrior keeper Clint Long.

CSUDH, which improved to 7-2-2, 5-2-2 CCAA, took its first lead of the night 20 minutes later as former Warrior Jio Santana lined up for a penalty kick after the Warriors were whistled for a foul inside their zone, and connected past Long for a 2-1 lead.

The Toros looked to run away with the win a few minutes into the second half when Andrew Johnson got in on the scoring, taking a cross from Salazar and flicking his shot over the drawn out Long for a 3-1 lead.

CSUS began its comeback in the 59th minute on the first of two Jose Ramirez goals, the first coming on a flick over a hard-charging Trey Mitchell, and the second on a beautiful blast that beat Mitchell top shelf to tie the game at 3-3 with under four minutes left in regulation.

In the extra frame, Covarrubias out-did Ramirez's blast with one of his own, sending a riser that connected top shelf for the golden goal just 5:32 into the overtime.

The Toros dominated the shot category with a 23-9 edge, but Long was up to the challenge with 6 saves on the night.

Dickerson and Mitchell combined for 3 saves, with Dickerson re-entering the game in the overtime period to pick up the win.

CSUDH will look to bring its win streak to three on Sunday as Cal State East Bay visits Toro Stadium on "Think Pink" day, with first kick set for 2 pm.
