No. 6 Cal Poly Pomona Snaps Toros Win Streak in 57-47 Win

Box Score

CARSON -- If ever a game in January could be considered playoff-like, tonight was the night as a pair of defensive-minded heavyweights battled in Carson, with No. 6 Cal Poly Pomona taking an intense 57-47 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Torodome.

DeShaun Freeman led the Toros with 13 points in the loss that drops the Toros to 10-8, 6-5 CCAA.  The Broncos, meanwhile, win their seventh-straight in improving to 14-1, 10-1 CCAA.

The Toros endured a cold start to the contest, hitting just 3-of-16 shots and staring at a 17-9 deficiit.

A pair of Myron Green free throws cut into the deficit, but CSUDH mustered just two more points as the Broncos took a 23-13 lead entering the half.

The Toro offense picked up steam after the break, with a Deon Geary triple at the 14:38 mark bringing CSUDH to within 25-18 with just over 5 minutes elapsed in the period, starting a run that saw the Toros take their first lead
of the game at 35-34 at 8:57 on a Lamine Diame old-fashioned 3 point play, only to see the Broncos reply with a 6-1 run to go up 40-36 with just under 7 minutes left in regulation.

The Toros fought back to tie the game at 42-42 at the 3:30 mark, when DeShaun Freeman powered his way to the hole, and delivered a bucket as he was fouled before converting the free throw to give CSUDH a 45-42 lead.

CPP's aggressiveness, however, was rewarded after making four-consecutive free throws to take a 46-45 lead, before Bronco Jordan Faison converted his own old-fashioned 3-point play to up CPP's lead to four.

The Toros' problems were compounded after commiting a shot clock violation with 1:39 left, and a Bronco dagger ensued via a 3-pointer by Derron Scott to push CPP's lead to 52-45 with 78 ticks left on the clock.

A missed Toro attempt and a foul after the Broncos rebounded resulted in a pair of made free throws by Cal Poly Pomona, all but sealing the win as CPP outscored the Toros 15-2 down the stretch in the 10-point win.

Both teams shot below 40% for the contest, but found success at the line (CPP - 72%, CSUDH - 75%).

Lamine Diame pulled down a game-high 11 boards while ading 7 points, with Green also adding 7 in the loss.

Terrence Drisdom finished with a game-high 20 points for the BRoncos, with Scott adding 12.

The Toros look to get back in the win column tomorrow night against Humboldt State, which fell 77-70 at Cal State L.A. earlier.  The game will be streamed live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
