Sako Chapjian enjoyed a solid game at the plate
Box Score

CARSON -- Reliever Hector Gomez gave up just one hit in four innings of play to help lead the Toros to an 11-6 win over Cal State East Bay on a windy Thursday afternoon in a California Collegiate Athletics Association contest.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is no longer at the bottom of the standings after improving to 10-19 overall and 6-15 in the CCAA.  The Pioneers fall to 11-20 overall, 5-16 in conference play.

Sean Wardour started off the afternoon and struggled to hold off the Pioneer bats.  In the third, Wardour was victimized by a porous CSUDH defense that allowed two runs to cross the plate.

Still struggling in the fourth, he allowed one more run to cross the plate, but with a single by Sako Chapjian followed by Chris Vopinek's first homerun of the season, the Toros bounced right back in the game down by just one run.

The fifth brought on more trouble for the Toros as the Pioneers loaded the bases on back-to-back-to-back walks to open the frame, but Gomez entered and wiggled out of the jam after allowing just one run to score.

CSUDH's bats came alive in the sixth inning with Chapjian and Vopinek at the root of the two-run inning to tie the game.

In the seventh the Toros would score thrice as Drew Rodela connected for his only hit of the game followed by a double by Chapjian, a single by Chris Allen, and a single by Devon Ramirez

The Toros continued to beat up on the Pioneer pitching, all the while Gomez held CSUEB to just one hit through the top of the eighth.  Four more runs came in the bottom of the eighth with Chapjian once again a major contributor after launching his fourth homerun of the season to dead center field.

Allen led off the rally prior to the two-run homerun of the eighth inning with a single to third base.  Matt Akiyama then singled to the opposite corner to push Allen over to third.  After Vopinek tallied another RBI single that scored Allen followed by a one-out ground out by Ramirez, Akiyama was able to score the fourth and final Toro run of the game.

Vopinek then took his spot on the mound to close out the win.  With pinch-hitters at every at-bat, Vopinek had his work cut out for him and allowed two runs across in the top of the ninth.  Although the Pioneers challenged it with the tying run in the hole, the Toro defense was able to hold the 11-6 lead for the win.

Chapjian marked his sixth consecutive game with a hit, run, and RBI.  Swinging 4-for-5 on the afternoon he scored three runs himself while batting in two.  Vopinek recorded his best offensive game yet hitting 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.

Akiyama and Ramirez also had strong offensive outings in the Thursday match-up going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and 2-for-5 with three runs scored, respectively.

Starter Sean Wardour only made it through four innings of work, allowing two earned runs on four hits, walking five batters, and only striking out one batter.

The Toros will play game two and three of the series in a doubleheader on Toro Field tomorrow afternoon.  First pitch against CSUEB is at 11 a.m., with both games being broadcast live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
