Toros Send Three Out of the Park, But Still Fall 15-3 at Chico State

Box Score
CHICO -- Junior Matthew Young connected for a two homerun night, but it was not enough as Chico State rolled to a lopsided 15-3 win in the series opener Friday night.

Carlos Avila joined Young in the homerun derby with a solo shot in the first inning.

With the loss, the Toros remain at the bottom of the California Collegiate Athletic Association at 8-25 and an overall record of 12-29, while the Wildcats improve to 30-13 overall, 20-13 in conference play.

The Toros scored two of their runs early on with back-to-back homeruns by Young and Avila.

Sean Wardour started off strong in the first for the guests allowing just three hits, but could not hold them off for long.  The second inning came crashing down when Chico State was able to cross the plate eight times to take an 8-2 lead over the Toros.

The Wildcats extended their lead with seven more runs in the third to put the game away with a 15-2 lead after three, until a Young home run in the eighth accounted for the game's final tally.

Leading on the night was Young, hitting 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, including his two homeruns and a double.  Avila joined with a homerun, swinging 2-for-4 on the night.

The Toros will be back in action against the Wildcats tomorrow for a doubleheader with a 12 p.m. first pitch start.
