Chico State Advances Past Toros in CCAA Men's Semifinal

Box Score
CARSON -- Chico State keeper Sam Evans made consecutive saves on the fourth and fifth penalty kick attempts after the No. 2 seeded Wildcats and No. 3 seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills played to a 1-1 double overtime draw, sending CSUC to Sunday's title game against CS Stanislaus, an earlier winner over top-seeded Cal State L.A.  Sebastian Cortez notched the lone goal for the Toros in the draw.

With the draw, the Toros now sit at 10-6-2, while the Wildcats move to 11-6-1.  Additionally, Chico State looks to solidify its No. 5 seed in the NCAA west, while the Warriors, by virtue of their convincing win over the Golden Eagles tonight, could jump CSUDH for No. 7, and could move as high as No. 6 or better with a win on Sunday.

Chico State took advantage of the intense match-up early after a caution to Jordan Hatanaka for a tackle inside the box gave Akwafei Ajeakwa a penalty kick try, which he launched into the upper left V past a leaping Trey Mitchell for a 1-0 lead at 35:58.

Hatanaka had a golden opportunity to redeem himself in the 56th minute after lining up for a penalty kick opportunity of his own, but his adrenaline sailed his shot high, keeping the Wildcats in front.

That's where the score remained unitl the 78th minute when Christian Soto sent a cross inside the box, where Cortez finished past Evans for the equalizer
.

After neither team found paydirt in either overtime period, the game went into a shootout.

Chico State's Kramer Runager sent the shootout's first try wide left, with Aaron Salazar netting his attempt to give CSUDH a 1-0 lead after round one.

The next five attempts all found the back of the net to make the shootout 3-3, with two more tries by the Toros and just one for the Wildcats.

Richard Molina stepped up with a chance to put all the pressure on CSUC, but his push was speared by Evans, giving the Wildcats momentum.

Luke Palmer then capitalized with a shot past Mitchell to put the pressure back on the Toros, with Evans making the save of the night on Wyatt Stucker by guessing left to send and stopping Stucker's blast to send the Wildcats to Sunday's title game.

CSUDH tallied a 19-8 shot advantage and 6-4 edge in corners, with Evans finishing with 6 saves compared to 2 by Mitchell.

The Toros will have to wait until Monday to find out their NCAA postseason fate.  The NCAA will stream the Division II men's soccer selection show at 4 pm, with the stream here.
