Men's Soccer Slips to No. 7 in NCAA Region Poll

Showdown looms against No. 5 Chico State on Friday at 7 pm

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Having its 7-match win streak stopped at San Francisco State in the final game of the regular season, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team dropped one spot to No. 7 in this week's NCAA west region poll, the third poll of the season.

The top six teams from each region qualify for the NCAA postseason, with the top two seeds hosting 3-team sub-regionals, beginning either November 8 or 9 at sites to be determined.

The Toros, currently at 10-6-1 overall and 10-5 in the CCAA, had won seven-straight and 9 of their last 10 contests, including a thrilling 3-2 win over arch-rival Sonoma State on October 19, in the Home Depot Center's Main Stadium.

Newcome Aaron Salazar leads CSUDH with 6 goals and 18 points, with fellow newcomer Jio Santana chipping in 5 goals and 17 points, and Miguel Vazquez (pictured) contributing 7 assists and 15 points.

In net, junior Trey Mitchell and sophomore Juan Quiroz have combined for a 1.04 GAA, and 57 of the team's 60 saves.

Simon Fraser continued its hold as the top-seeded squad, Grand Canyon moving up one to No. 2 in the region.  Northwest power Seattle Pacific slipped a spot to No. 3, with Notre Dame de Namur making a huge three-spot leap to No. 4.  Chico State and Cal State L.A. follow at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, with the Toros and Cal State Stanislaus currently on the outside looking in.

The Toros will need a win over Chico State to make its case for the NCAA postseason, whereas a loss to the Wildcats conceivably will make it the Toros' case for entry much harder to justify in the current No. 7 spot.

Cal State L.A. and Cal State Stanislaus begin the men's semifinal of the CCAA tournament on Friday at 4:30 pm, with the Toros and Wildcats hooking up in the nightcap at 7 pm.
