CARSON -- Two goals by visiting Chico State's Octavio Guzman in a four-goal second half turned a close game into a blowout as the defending NCAA West Region Champion Wildcats took a stunning 5-0 win over No. 23-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills on a windy and cool Friday night in Carson.
This marks the worst loss for the program since October 16, 2005, when Sonoma State handed the Toros a 6-0 drubbing in Rohnert Park.
The night started innocently enough after Wildcat Ferid Celosmanovic showed why he's one of the top scorers in the league, dribbling around a Toro defender, spinning and launching his shot past CSUDH keeper
Markus Dickerson near post at the 34:35 mark.
Entering the second half down 1-0, things fell apart quickly for the Toros as Chico State scored thrice in the first 10 minutes of the frame, with Guzman's one-timer beginning the spurt at 47:55 and ending it with a header past Dickerson at 53:06 for a 4-0 lead, just 31 seconds after Chris Akwaya scored from point-blank range.
Chris Paulo cemented the win in the 82nd minute with an open netter after Adam Black won a 50/50 ball from Dickerson and found Paulo wide open for the sitter.
Surprisingly, the Toros out-shot Chico State 18-12 and out-cornered them 14-1, but the efficient visitors connected for 5 goals in 7 shots on frame.
The Toros, now 3-1-1, 1-1-1 CCAA, look to regroup on Sunday as CS Stanislaus visits Carson after falling 2-1 at Cal State L.A. earlier this evening.
