Leyva Sets CCAA Record as Baseball Splits Doubleheader at CSU East Bay

Senior Carlos Leyva set a new all-time CCAA runs record today at 188

HAYWARD -- Saturday's doubleheader turned out to be a record setting day for one Toro as Carlos Leyva set the all-time CCAA record for runs scored by scoring two runs in the opener to give him 188 for his career as CSUDH split this afternoon's double-header, winning game one 4-1 before falling in the nightcap 9-5.

With the split, the Toro hold a two-games-to-one lead heading into tomorrow's regular season finale.
CSUDH (17-21, 13-18 CCAA) started the scoring in game one in the top of the second on a single, double and sac fly for an early 1-0 lead, before the Pioneers tied the score in the bottom of the fourth on a single and an error. 

The record-setting run for Leyva started by reaching on an error by the second baseman.  After a steal of second base, Leyva scored his 187th career run on a single off the bat of Jose Jauregui to take a 2-1 lead. 

The lead grew in the top of the seventh on two unearned runs, with Barrett Ceverha starting the rally with a single.  It brought the final score to 4-1 with senior Michael Cruz notching his second save of the season. 

Toros starter Sean Wardour was ace-like in his fourth win of the season, going six strong innings and allowing only three hits and one unearned run while striking out eight Pioneers. 

Over the first three innings of game two, CSUEB (10-26, 8-21 CCAA) jumped out to a 6-0 lead highlighted by a four-run second inning. 

The Toros inched closer, coming within two runs at 7-5 in the top of the sixth.  Junior Brian Gregory drove in a run in both the fifth and sixth innings while Abel Medina hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth, but CSU East Bay added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game to its 9-5 final in favor of the Pioneers.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros baseball squad will look to close out CSUEB on Sunday, April 10 with first pitch set for 11:00am.
