CSUDH Salvages Split With 3-2 Nightcap Win Over No. 5 Chico State

Senior David Fair guided the Toros to a game two victory

CARSON -- Matched up against one of the best pitching staffs in the west region, the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills ended Saturday's twinbill with a 2-1 series lead over 5th-ranked Chico State after taking a 3-2 nightcap win behind the clutch pitching of senior David Fair, who tossed six innings of 6-hit ball.

The Wildcats, who allowed the most runs they had allowed all season in yesterday's opener, took the first game 5-2.

Game two saw the scoring get started with the first batter in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Jonathan Keener, his third of the season and second of the weekend.  CSUDH wasn't done as back-to-back singles led to an RBI groundout and an RBI triple by Carlos Leyva to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of the hosts.

Chico State added a run in the top of the fourth but its rally was killed by a diving stop that turned into an inning-ending double play thanks to shortstop Abel Medina.

The Wildcats scraped together a run in the 6th, but Fair got out of the jam leading 3-2, allowing senior Michael Cruz to come in for a 1-2-3 7th inning for his first save of the season.

Fair picked up his second win of the season after throwing six innings, allowing only two runs on six hits.

One of the best pitchers in the league over his most recent starts, Toro starter Josh Corrales got off to a rocky start to begin the afternoon by loading the bases for Chico State in the opener without recording an out, resulting in a quick 3-0 Wildcat lead after being held scoreless through six innings of yesterday's series opener.

After the offensive first frame, both offenses were quiet until a two-out Wildcat error in the bottom of the third allowed Kevin Pillar to come to the plate, where he proceeded to turn on a hanging curve by CSUC starter Ryan O'Shea and deposit it over the fence to cut CSUDH's deficit to just 3-2.

The Wildcats, however, answered with a single run in the top of the 4th to push their lead to 4-2.

Over his last six innings of work, Corrales was his usual self allowing just three hits and no earned runs.  However, CSUC freshman starter O'Shea was better, going 7.1 innings, allowing only five hits, two unearned runs and striking out eight Toros.

The Toros bullpen allowed a run in the top of the eighth to bring the game to its final score of 5-2 in favor of the visiting squad.

Prior to the game the Toros baseball team showed its support of Toyota Corporation's promoting the Department of Athletics FJ Cruiser raffle by displaying a new 2011 FJ Cruiser in front of the entrance gate throughout the afternoon.
