Corrales Pitches Toros to 5-3 Victory at CS San Bernardino

Junior draft prospect Josh Corrales went eight innings, allowing only one run

SAN BERNARDINO -- In need of a victory to even up the series after falling behind one game to none, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros turned to junior starting pitcher Josh Corrales and once again, he did not disappoint as he helped lead the Toros to a 5-3 road victory over Cal State San Bernardino.  Corrales went eight strong, scattering 12 hits, striking out seven while allowing only one run.

The Toros set the tone for the game by scoring two runs in the top of the first.  After a lead-off single by Carlos Leyva and a sacrifice bunt, senior Kevin Pillar added to his all-time program doubles and hits record by scorching an RBI double to center field.  Pillar scored on an RBI groundout by Abel Medina after he stole third base.

Through the first five innings, Corrales allowed at least one hit in each inning with only a solo home run to start off the bottom of the fourth cutting into the Toros lead.

The sixth inning saw both teams grab at least three hits, but CSUDH scored three runs in the inning while CSUSB was shut out.  Shortstop Medina started the inning with his second homer of the year, the solo variety to center.  Not to be outdone, third baseman Ricky Vasquez drilled his first four-bagger to left field three batters later, driving in Jonathan Keener.  The Coyotes loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half thanks to three hits but a line drive double-play ended that rally.

CSUSB tried to mount a rally once Corrales left the game in the bottom of the ninth, getting three hits and cashing in two unearned runs thanks to an error.  Sophomore Andrew Klausmeier, however, buckled down to strike out the final two batters he faced to end the game.

Medina and Vasquez each had two RBIs while Pillar and senior Barrett Ceverha led the team with two hits.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will finish out the four-game series with a home doubleheader Saturday, March 19, with first pitch at 11:00am at Toro Field.
