Toros Power to 8-2 Win Over No. 3 UC San Diego

CARSON -- Senior Abel Medina clubbed a 3-run home run for the first long ball allowed by UC San Diego pitching, and starting pitcher Josh Corrales made it stand up with a gutty 7.0-inning, 6-hit performance as the Toros took game two of the four-game set by an 8-2 count.

Medina started his hot hitting in the bottom of the first as an RBI single to right field knotted the game at 1-1, before Kyle Pond broke the tie with an RBI single of his own two innings later.

After each team put one across in the fourth inning, Medina gave the Toros breathing room after belting a no-doubter well over the right field wall and into the street, bringing home Pond and Kevin Pillar, who drew consecutive one-out walks.

The Toros added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as two hit batters led off the frame, with one run coming home on the final Medina RBI and the other crossing the plate before Medina was caught in a run down.

CSUDH's lead was plenty for starter Corrales, who picked up his second win of the year after tossing 7.0 innings and scattering six hits, before stepping aside for the Toro bullpen, which kept the Tritons off the board despite UCSD loading the bases in the ninth inning on three walks from two Toro pitchers, only to leave them stranded after a diving catch by third baseman Ricky Vasquez in foul territory accounted for the final out of the game.

Medina finished with a 3-for-4 effort and 5 RBI, with five other Toros chipping in a hit each.  Danny Susdorf matched Medina's hit effort with three, while Blake Tagmyre notched two in UCSD's loss.

The two teams conclude their four-game regular-season series tomorrow in La Jolla, with first pitch of game one's double-header set for 12 noon.
