Youngdale Outduels Shibuya as Toros Take Game One, 4-3, Over No. 3 UC San Diego

CARSON -- Senior ace Shane Youngdale proved his worth with a masterful performance to kick off a four-game set against NCAA runner-up and 3rd-ranked UC San Diego and its ace Tim Shibuya, leading the Toros to a 4-3 win over the visiting Tritons.

With the win, the Toros improved to 7-13, 3-10 CCAA, while the Tritons fall to 15-6, 8-5 CCAA.

Youngdale was stellar in picking up his second win of the season, keeping the high-octane Triton offense off the board for five innings while benefiting from a 4-0 run cushion over the first four.

The Toros got Youngdale his first run in the bottom of the first as Kevin Pillar doubled home Carlos Leyva, who began his perfect 3-for-3 day with a double to center field.

Three innings later, CSUDH put up three more runs as two walks, including an intentional free pass to Leyva, set the stage for Kyle Pond, who made UCSD pay with a 2RBI double to right-center, after which Pillar picked up his second RBI of the day with a stinging single to left field.

That looked like more than enough for Youngdale, who limited UCSD to just three hits over the first five innings.

In the top of the 6th, however, the Tritons scratched together their first run on a Blake Tagmyre single to right field to cut the CSUDH lead to 4-1.

Three innings later, UCSD got to Youngdale with a leadoff double and single, and two RBI singles following an out to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out, prompting a pitching change.

With sophomore Andrew Klausmeier entering, UCSD looked to rattle him by sending both runners on an attempted run and hit, but hitter Garrett Tuck whiffed at Klausmeier's offering and Toro catcher Jonathan Keener gunned out Nick La Face at third for the second out, before Klausmeier fanned Tuck on a 1-2 curve ball to notch the Toros' first save of the year.

In addition to Levya's 3-for-3 effort, Pillar roped two hits with 2 RBI, while Pond delivered the big 2RBI double in the fourth.

Tagmyer led UCSD with a 3-for-4 game, while Danny Susdorf added a 2-for-4 effort in the loss.

CSUDH and UCSD hook up again tomorrow for the second and final game in Carson, with first pitch set for 2:00 pm on Toro Field.  Look for all the updates on www.Twitter.com/TorosAthletics.
