Toros Make Point of Holding On Against Sea Lions

CARSON -- Looking to get back to its winning ways, Cal State Dominguez Hills built a 14-point first half lead against visiting Point Loma Nazarene and held on for a 54-50 win despite not boasting a single player in double-figure scoring.  Myron Green was one of two Toros with nine points, his coming on 5-of-4 shooting from the field.

With the win, the Toros improve to 2-3 on the young season, while PLNU falls to 4-3.

Bolstered by 7 first half points by Green and three players with 4 points each, the Toros raced to an 11-point lead at 15-4 with just under 10 minutes elapsed in the first half, increasing it to 14 at 23-9 on a Robert Willhite flush at the 5:38 mark.

An ensuing 8-2 run by the visitors, however, closed the gap to just 25-17 entering the break, giving the Sea Lions a huge momentum lift.

While the Toros earned the second half's first score on a pair of Wayne Andrews free throws, PLNU cut its deficit to just 27-25 three minutes later on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Todd Campbell.

This spurred a 7-0 Toro run that gave the hosts breathing roomat 34-25, until a 9-1 run by the Sea Lions tied the game for the first time since the opening tip on a Rhett Beal lay-up.

PLNU took its first lead of the game on its next possession, before Everrett Brown answered with a triple and the lead once again.

The game endured two more lead changes until a Sheldon Allen jumper gave the Toros the lead for good at 48-47 with just 3:53 remaining in the game, where two Brian Gee free throws with two ticks left sealed the contests for the Cardinal and Gold.

Willhite also added nine points in the win, while the rest of the Toros chipped in with either six or three points exactly en route to hitting .513 from the floor.

Marek Klassen and Beal shared scoring honors with 11 points each, but a woeful 6-for-20 effort in the first half proved too big an obstacle to overcome.

CSUDH, now 2-3 on the year, takes to the road next weekend before hosting cross-town rival Cal State L.A. on December 30 to close out the calendar year.  That game can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network by clicking here.
