Headers Trump Hand Ball as Sonoma State Takes 2-1 Double OT Win Over Toros

Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- No. 24 Cal State Dominguez Hills took advantage of a handball called in the Sonoma State box that resulted in a successful Billy Gutierrez penalty kick to knot the score at 1-1 with 54 ticks left in regulation, but the host Seawolves got the last word in as Taylor Varnadore headed in the golden goal in the 107th minute to end CSUDH's win streak at 5.

An announced crowd of 520 witnessed another classic between two teams that typically bring out the best in each other.

This afternoon was no different as a 7-5 shot advantage by CSUDH in the first half was matched by SSU's 6-5 edge after the break, which kept the momentum through both overtime periods.

The game was scoreless after the first 45-minute session when SSU's Trevor Hurst gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at the 48:41 mark after collecting a deflection and heading his shot past Toro keeper Markus Dickerson.

SSU's lead held up until the waning seconds when the Toro attack resulted in a Seawolf handball, setting up a penalty kick attempt, which Gutierrez converted with just 54 seconds left in regulation.

That newfound momentum quickly turned back in SSU's favor as the Seawolves fired off 4 shots in the first overtime session and 3 in the second compared to no shots by the Toros, with the final SSU attempt by Varnadore ending the game at the 106:16 mark.

Dickeson finished with 8 saves while counterpart Taylor Jones tallied 6 in the double overtime thriller.

The Toros, now 8-3-1, 6-3-1 CCAA, continue road action next Friday as they take on CS San Bernardino.
