Smith's Double-Double Highlights 3-0 Sweep at Hands of No. 18 UC San Diego

LA JOLLA - Freshman outside Azieanna Smith posted a career-best .343 hitting percentage with 14 kills and just two errors, but 18th-ranked UC San Diego committed seven fewer errors in taking a hard-fought 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 win over the Toros on Saturday night.

Smith enjoyed her second double-double of her career,  tallying 10 digs as one of five Toros with at least 10 digs.

Sophomore Elizabeth Krieger also posted a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs in the match as CSUDH played closer than the scores indicated.

CSUDH kept set one close throughout, tying as late as 10-10 and keeping close at 17-14 before UCSD put together a set-ending 8-3 run to take the opener.

Set two proved to be a mirror image of the first as the Toros tied as late as 13-13 before the hosts took 12 of the final 18 points of the stanza.

In the third, however, CSUDH fell behind early and often after trailing by as much as 18-9, but staged a comeback in cutting its deficit to one late, with a Delea Pursel blast getting the Toros to within 22-21.

The hosts, however, used two kills and a service ace over the final four points to put away the pesky Toros in a sweep.

UCSD hit just .194 compared to .121 for the Toros, but dominated the net en route to a 5.5 to 1.0 block edge.

Not one Triton tallied double-figure kill totals as UCSD improved to 15-4, 11-4 CCAA, but used a -7 edge in errors to take the contest.

CSUDH, now 1-18, 0-15 CCAA, returns home for its final three matches, beginning with cross-town rival Cal State L.A. on Tuesday, October 25.
