Men's Soccer Survives Scare in 3-2 Win at UC San Diego

Miguel Vasquez played a role in all 3 scores in today's nail-biter
Box Score
LA JOLLA -- A blowout turned into a "hold your breath" moment for a Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team fighting for its California Collegiate Athletic Association playoff life as host UC San Diego scored two second-half goals in a span of 43 seconds before the Toros closed the door in a 3-2 win.  Miguel Vazquez tallied 2 scores and an assist in the victory.

The win, coupled with Cal Poly Pomona's loss to Chico State earlier today, puts the Toros in a first-place tie with the Broncos in the CCAA South, with just four regular season games left to play.

CSUDH started its offensive first half of play early after Ronald Ybarra executed a one-time pass deep in the Triton zone in the 11th minute, allowing Vazquez to chip it past UCSD keeper Jesse Brennan for a 1-0 lead.

Vazquez took his turn as the distributor eight minutes later working a give-and-go with Jordan Rover, who flushed home his score from six yards out.

The Murrieta native then closed out CSUDH's scoring in the 33rd minute after taking a Juan Quinonez pass from the right corner and one-timing his shot inside the left post for what appeared to be an insurmountable 3-0 cushion entering the half.

It still appeared that way after Toro starter Juan Quiroz and the CSUDH defense kept the hosts off the board for the first 80 minutes of play.

That all changed, however, when the Tritons were awarded a penalty kick opportunity at 80:47, where Cory Wolfrom's conversion cut the lead to 3-1.

After a caution to the Toros and a keeper change that brought in Markus Dickerson, UCSD struck again as a free kick from the left side was chipped in by Alec Arsht at 81:30, bringing the Tritons to the brink of an improbably comeback.

That would be as close as UCSD would get, however, as Dickerson and the Toro defense withstood one final Triton push that included a header in the 90th minute, and took the 3-2 win that gave the Toros a sweep of the regular season series.

The Tritons dominated the second half to the tune of a 14-5 shot advantage, but could not get over their early deficit.

CSUDH, now 10-3-1, 8-3-1 CCAA, concludes its regular season homestand next weekend, starting with co-South leader Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night as "Homecoming" festivities conclude with the contest, with first kick set for 7:00 pm in Toro Stadium, at the Home Depot Center's Track and Field Facility.
