Fifty-Four Toros Recognized by NCAS for Excellence in the Classroom and Community

BOSTON, Mass. -- Fifty-four Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athletes were recognized by the NCAA as part of the 23rd Annual STUDENT-Athlete Day, celebrated annually on April 6.  These exceptional student-athletes, encompassing nearly all CSUDH sports, were chosen based on both their minimum 3.0 GPA and active involvement in the community.

National STUDENT-Athlete Day, celebrated annually since its inception in 1987 and currently presented with the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, and is America's day to celebrate outstanding student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to the community, also recognizing parents, teachers, coaches and universities which help student-athletes bridge the gap between academics and athletics.

In addition to the community service each sport contributes throughout the year, which thus far has included "Soccer for Hope," "Read Across America," "Girls Play L.A.," work with the RBI Foundation and clinics at local pre-schools and health fairs and will include youth camps, a career day and speaking opportunities in the upcoming months, volleyball's #Ashley Clark#, baseball's #Kevin Pillar#, cross country's #Dora Baldwin# and track and field's #Monique Joseph# also were recognized for their involvement as officers in the CSUDH Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Men's and women's soccer claimed the top team honor with 11 student-athletes each, with women's basketball right behind at 10.  Softball followed with eight, while baseball placed seven, and men's basketball three, cross country two, and volleyball and track and field one apiece.

Of the 54 student-athletes, men's soccer's #Scott Locken# and cross country's #Janette Morfin# boasted perfect 4.0 GPAs as 14 total earned at least a 3.6 GPA during the fall semester.
