Kurowski Hurls Complete-Game Shutout to Lead Toros to Sweep Over No. 29 Chico State

CHICO -- Keeping the bats of the No. 29 Chico State Wildcats silent for three straight frames, Kody Kurowski worked a complete-game six hitter to shut down the 'Cats as the No. 13 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros grabbed a 3-0 win in the day's opener before a rallying come-from-behind 7-3 win in the nightcap.

Described as a "snoozer" on the mound by Chico State's and ESPN Radio announcer Mitch Cox with his extended amount of time between pitches, Kurowski's patience paid off as he held Chico to a no-hitter for the first three frames with only one multi-hit inning on the day.

The nine innings of duty is the first complete-game shutout in Kurowski's career and is the first shutout against an NCAA ranked opponent for the Toros since 2006 when Chris Borchers logged a complete game 9-0 win against No. 20 Cal State L.A.

With the win, Kurowski improves his record to 7-2 while drastically reducing his ERA from 6.20 to 5.40.

In game one, the Toros got all the runs they would need in the win in only the first frame as a 2RBI single to deep center by Kevin Pillar made the board 2-0 Toros.

With a single late in the fifth, Abel Medina added an insurance run in the 3-0 win.

The day's nightcap looked to again be just as slow as the two previous games, with the 'Cats holding a 3-1 lead over the Toros through five innings of play.

Unwilling to go out with a split, the Toros pulled a sixth inning rally, with a Carlos Leyva single that ignited a four-run, four-hit frame with Kyle Pond bringing in the game-winner, an RBI double to left-center that saw Medina safely scamper home.

The Toros again extended their lead in the seventh, making the most of three different Chico pitchers to grab two more runs on just as many hits with Pond again making a mark with a sacrifice fly to bring in the final run for the Toros.

Starting in game two's action, David Fair logged 2.1 frames, fanning four batters before being pulled after scattering four hits and three runs.  Taking over in relief and grabbing the win, Sean Wardour enjoyed a phenomenal outing, holding Chico scoreless through 4.2 frames, giving up only one hit and fanning four batters.

Pillar would also record a single in game two to extend his current hit-streak to 42 straight games, now the all-time No. 3 hit streak in NCAA Division II baseball history and seven games short of tying the all-time record.

The Toros, 33-11 overall and 23-8 in the CCAA will close out the series against the 'Cats (27-14, 22-13 CCAA) tomorrow with a single-game set at 12 noon.
