Toros' Late-Game Rally Snuffed By Pioneers in 12-11 Loss

Box Score
CARSON -- Down 3-12 going into the seventh, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team pulled out all the stops to grab eight runs in two frames only to be shut down by the visiting Pioneers of Cal State East Bay in the ninth to hand CSUEB their first series win in a 12-11 decision.  The biggest producer for the Toros, Kevin Pillar logged three hits and drove in four runs.

Not only driving in four runs on three hits, he brought in all his RBIs in the seventh and eighth frames with two two-RBI doubles to keep his game hitting streak alive at 22, one short of tying the current record.

Also key for the Toros, Dean Benavidez slugged his fourth homer of the season on a 1-1 pitch as the lead-off batter in the eighth to start what would end as a four-hit, six run rally.

In a game that started slow and steady both teams grabbed two runs in the first three frames and laid dormant in the fourth before the Pioneers took off in the fifth.

In that frame Levi Josewski belted a 2-1 blast over the left fence with two on to grab three more runs for the Pioneers improving their lead to 6-3.

The visitors grabbed one more in the sixth before a powerhouse seventh inning with four hits, three of them back-to-back-to-back doubles.

After notching two runs in the bottom of that frame and holding the Pioneers scoreless in the eighth the Toros fired up in their second-to-last offensive say with Pillar's two-RBI double, a Jose Jauregui two-RBI single and the lead-off Benavidez home run.

Taking the mound in the ninth, Matt Phillips shut down the side with two strike outs to give his bench a final go.

In the last frame and the 1-2-3 batters up, Carlos Leyva sliced a single through the right that would get him to third with two away.  Taking the dish Pillar's luck ran out as his game-tying hit landed deeply in the CSUEB center fielder's glove to end the game 11-12.

The Toro bullpen had their work cut out for them on the day with six total hurlers taking the mound.  Starter David Fair logged 2.2 hitless innings, giving up only two runs before being pulled after five walks.

Pitching immediate relief after Fair, Sean Wardour would give up the Pioneer go-ahead run to hand him the loss after 2.1 innings of duty and two strike outs.

Unable to pull a sweep the loss puts the Toros at a 16-7 overall mark and 11-4 in the CCAA.  One of the most important series of the 2010 season, CSUDH will host the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino this Thursday at 3:00pm to begin a four-game series.
