Turnovers Plague Toros in 68-58 Loss to League Leader Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score
CARSON -- Riding the high that was last night's epic overtime win against then co-league leader Cal State San Bernardino to give them five-straight wins, Cal State Dominguez Hills committed 20 turnovers to visiting Cal Poly Pomona's 11, and the result was a 68-58 Bronco win that gave CPP its 11th-straight victory.  Marcquintice Davis led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor.

The Broncos began the game on a 7-4 run, only to see the Toros answer with a 9-2 spurt of their own, keyed by Davis' 3-point acumen that led to a 13-9 Toro lead and 8 first-half points.

Staunch defense then set in for Pomona, which took a 22-15 lead on a Dwayne fells jumper at the 4:35 mark of the first half, before entering the locker room up 27-21.

The Toros buckled down on the defensive end themselves to start the second half, whittling their deficit to 32-31 on an Amir Aguilar free throw with 15 minutes left, eventually taking a 48-47 lead on a Tim McGrath lay-up eight minutes later.

Outscoring CPP 3-2 over the next five minutes and taking a 51-49 lead at the 5:47 mark, however, would prove to be CSUDH's last hurrah as the Broncos used a 17-5 run over the next next 5:35 to take their first double-digit lead at 66-56, before an exchange of baskets accounted for the final 68-58 CPP victory.

The Broncos, who improved to 18-5, 16-4 CCAA, featured four players in double-figure scoring, with 12 each by Matthew Rosser, Austin Swift and Mitchell Anderson, while shooting at an efficient 54.5% clip for the game.

In addition to Davis' 15 points, Tim McLaurin chipped in 14, with Aguilar tallying 7 rebounds and 6 points in the loss that saw CSUDH shoot an astonishing 60.0% from the field.

CSUDH, now at 14-11, 14-6 CCAA, closes out its regular season next Thursday and Friday, before first-round hosting duties in the CCAA Tournament on Tuesday, March 2, against an opponent to be determined.
