Mixon's 23 Points Leads Toros to 52-50 Win at CS Monterey Bay

SEASIDE -- Scoring machine Neka Mixon notched a game-high 23 points, but none were more important than her two made free throws with 14 seconds left in regulation, sealing the win against a spirited Cal State Monterey Bay squad in a key Friday night conference road game.  With the win, CSUDH improves to 9-13, 8-9 CCAA.

Entering tonight's contest with two wins in its last three games, the visitors held a comfortable lead at 12-6 with 10 minutes elapsed in the first half.  A Brandie McCann triple seven minutes later increased the cushion to 8 at 19-11, before a Mixon jumper with 24 seconds left gave CSUDH its largest lead of the half at 26-17 before a Helen Suarez lay-in with eight seconds left brought the hosts to within 7 at 26-19 entering the half.

CSUDH maintained its mid-single digit lead after the break, before a Michelle Santizo 3-pointer gave the Otters life and cut their deficit to 37-34 with 11:29 left in regulation, getting as close as two points twice over the next six minutes, and to just one on a Santizo foul shot with 4:30 left in the game.

A Mixon jumper and two makes at the foul line, however, gave CSUDH a 5-point lead at 50-45 with just 84 seconds left in the game, while two more successes at the line with 14 ticks left provided the final Toro scoring in their nail-biting 2-point win as the Otters fel to 14-7, 10-7 CCAA.

The Toros enjoyed a huge rebounding night by Barbara Houston, who pulled down 16 boards in 31 minutes of play, with McCann's 12 aiding the CSUDH victory.

As a team, CSUDH shot just 27.9% compared to 34.0% for CSUMB, but won the game at the line after converting 11-of-17 from the charity stripe, compared to a dismal 9-of-22 performance for the Otters.

CSUDH will look to make it three-straight tomorrow night when it travels to San Francisco State, a two-point winner itself over Cal State L.A. in other league action.
