No. 15 Toros Take Out No. 1 Broncos in 59-54 OT Thriller

Box Score
CARSON -- It wasn't H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds," but Friday night's 59-54 thrilling overtime win over defending NCAA National Champion and top-ranked Cal Poly Pomona was a close second after No. 15 Cal State Dominguez Hills survived a miserable 4-for-22 first half shooting performance and staged a comeback for the ages behind a breakout performance by senior Zareh Zargaryan, who finished with 21 points in 27 minutes of play.

Tonight's win brings the Toros to a perfect 6-0, 2-0 CCAA, and to within one win from tying the record for victories to start the season, set during 2008-09.

After sprinting to a 6-0 lead on a bucket and four free throws, the Broncos went on a 16-0 run to quiet the partisan Toro crowd, before a Tim McLaurin free throw with 7:36 left in the half ended an 11+ minute scoring drought that saw CSUDH miss 13-consecutive shots from the field.

The Broncos, meanwhile fared better from the field at 40.9% in taking a commanding 31-16 edge at the break.

CPP continued its double-figure lead to start the second, before Zargaryan carried the Toros on his broad 6-6 shoulders, converting all 10 points of a 10-0 run to bring CSUDH within 39-32, nailing 5-of-6 baskets in the process en route to 18 second-half points.

Feeling momentum swing in their favor, a McLaurin three at the 8:40 mark cut CPP's lead to just two at 41-39, before another McLaurin bucket knotted the game for the second time at 41-41, sending the Torodome crowd into a frenzy, where it remained through the regulation and a 51-51 deadlock.

The extra session saw two more ties over the first four minutes, before a triple by Robert Willhite gave the Toros breathing room, and two final free throws by Zargaryan with six ticks left iced the game for CSUDH, giving the Toros their first win over a top-ranked team in the program's history, and third win over a ranked opponent this year after defeating just one ranked team in the past decade.

Zargaryan finished with a career high 21 points in 27 minutes, with McLaurin chipping in 13 in the barn-burner.  CPP's Tobias Jahn and Mitchel Anderson led the Broncos with 14 each, as neither team shot over 36% for the game.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Toros tomorrow night as perennial power CS San Bernardino visits Carson for a 7:30 pm first tip, after falling at Cal State L.A. earlier this evening.  Tomorrow's game also will benefit Helping Hands Pantry, and will broadcast live via internet TV on www.GoToros.com/live.
