No. 24 Toros to Defend Title Against Arch-Rival Sonoma State After 3-0 Win Over Chico State

Box Score
TURLOCK -- Needing only 34 minutes to prove their worth as a CCAA Tournament Champion contender, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team erased an earlier upset loss on the road to Chico State, grabbing a 3-0 win in the tournament first round behind a Scott Locken game-winner for a chance to defend their CCAA crown.

After grabbing a deflection off his own corner kick 34 minutes into the first half, Locken bested all Wildcat defenders in the box to notch the Toros on the board in the only needed score of the day.

Out-shooting the 'Cats by a 24-7 margin, including an 8-1 margin within the posts, the Toros had no difficulty dispatching their foes as keeper Markus Dickerson was forced to make only one save.

The Toros added two more for safety in the second half, the first coming way as Jordan Rover took a Billy Gutierrez feed on a breakaway in the 57th minute for goal number seven of the season.

With only one minute left on the day Alex Munoz grabbed his sixth goal of the season, sending a shot back following Diego Turoldo's deflection to notch goal number three for the Toros.

Now 14-4-2 overall, the Toros will face off against the Seawolves, a rivalry that has deeply developed over the past decade, with the two teams meeting in each of the past six CCAA Championship Tournaments heading into Sunday's match-up for the title.

In those six match-ups, CSUDH holds a 4-1-1 record, including two wins that have given the Toros two CCAA Titles (2007, 2009), with the loss and tie handing the crown to the Seawolves (2005, 2008).

In their 15 overall meetings since the 2004 season, the Toros hold a 10-3-2 advantage, which includes CSUDH having gone unbeaten against SSU in the last 8 games (6-0-2), and four-straight wins against the Seawolves, including the 3-0 victory this season in mid-October.

Entering this weekend's play, CS San Bernardino held its place as the top seed in the NCAA West, followed by Grand Canyon, CSUDH, CSUC, Notre Dame de Namur and Sonoma State, with the top four teams qualifying for NCAA postseason play.

By virtue of SSU's win over the Coyotes and NDNU's loss to Academy of Art yesterday, the CCAA is almost certain to get as many as three teams into the tournament, with CSUSB and CSUDH as at-large locks.

Kickoff for Sunday's CSUDH-SSU classic is set for an 11:30 am first kick.
