CARSON -- Visiting St. Edward's used a pair of first-half goals and one in the second to take a 3-0 win over 20th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills in its season home opener, dropping the Toros to 1-1 on the new year, despite CSUDH out-shooting the Hilltoppers 16-9 overall and 10-3 in the second half.
Lucas Galarza ripped off six shots in the contest with three on frame, while
Davien Karanikolas tallying five shots with one on frame. St. Edwards, however, equaled CSUDH's shot total of six in the first 45 minutes of play, scoring in the 19th and 42nd minutes to give the visitors a 2-nil lead entering the half.
CSUDH went on the offensive in the second half looking to get on the board, taking 10 shots compared to just three for the Hilltoppers. In the 75th minute, St. Edward's put the match away with another score, ending CSUDH's comeback hopes.
The Toros earned a 9-3 advantage in corners with the two teams combining for 31 fouls and eight cautions.
CSUDH hosts Westn Oregon University on Friday in another non-conference matchup, with first kick set for 7 pm at Toro Stadium.
