No. 19 Toros Leave No Doubt in 54-38 Win Over Cal State L.A.

Box Score
CARSON -- Opening its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule tonight, No. 19 Cal State Dominguez Hills left no doubt as to which team currently rules the league ... in Los Angeles county anyway.  Using a suffocating defense and a 17 point, 12 rebound effort by Michael Cox, the Toros remained unbeaten on the year after a solid 54-38 win over their cross-town rival Cal State L.A., limiting the Golden Eagle offense to a woeful 25.5% effort from the floor.

After a 41-point win in its last contest, the visitors failed to score 41 points as tonight's 38-point effort was the lowest output in the past five seasons, and three less than its previous low of 41 points set on January 30, 2009, in a 61-41 loss to Cal Poly Pomona.

Tonight's contest was a struggle offensively for both teams in the early going, with CSUDH enjoying a 13-6 lead with 9:20 left in the first half.  The Toros eventually found their stroke after stretching the advantage to 14 on three occasions, before settling for a 30-19 lead at the half.

CSUDH mirrored its effort in the first half by scoring the second half's first six points, the last coming on a James Cawthorne lay-up with 17:13 left in regulation.  The Toros' advantage grew to as much as 20 three times on a Cox jumper nine minutes later to give the hosts a 47-27 edge, and twice again on an Amir Aguilar free throw at 7:37, and on a Marcquintince Davis bucket at the 4:15 mark, before another Aguilar deuce produced the largest edge on the night at 54-32, with 1:21 left in the game.

Two CSULA threes with under a minute left accounted for the game's final tally, dropping the Golden Eagles to 3-1, 0-1 CCAA.

In addition to Cox's double-double, Aguilar came within a bucket and rebound shy of his own double-double, while Cawthorne chipped in 8 points and 6 boards.

The Toros finished shooting a respectable 40.7% for the game, but suffered at the charity stripe after hitting just 7-of-14 attempts.  The biggest edge for CSUDH came on the boards as the Toros almost doubled the effort of CSULA, grabbing 48 rebounds to just 26 for the visitors.

CSUDH, now 5-0, will have little time to savor tonight's victory as defending NCAA National Champion Cal Poly Pomona and perennial power Cal State San Bernardino visit Carson next weekend, with the games available via internet TV on www.GoToros.com/live both days.
