Cawthorne's Perfect Night at Foul Line Leads Toros to 58-49 Upset at No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score
POMONA, Calif. -- Visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills may have not shocked the world, but they sent the listed attendance of 437 home in foul mood after taking a 58-49 road win over No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona, the 2008-09 NCAA National Finalist.
Junior James Cawthorne led the Toros with 16 points and 6 boards, with his perfect 6-for-6 effort at the charity stripe sealing the CSUDH win.

The Toros, now winners of three-straight and five of their last six, picked up their first road win of the year with the victory.

Ranked No. 20 by the NABC heading into this weekend's play, the host Broncos jumped to an 8-1 lead over the first 2:45 of play, but the visitors out-scored the Broncos 24-12 over the final 17:15 to take a 25-20 lead entering the break.  Toro 7-footer Amir Aguilar, seeing his first action of the 2009-10 campaign, scored 6 points to lead CSUDH as the Toros committed just one turnover in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Toros kept their edge to begin the second period before a Dahir Nasser jumper at 12:58 regained the lead for the Broncos at 35-34, only to have Tim McLaurin answer with a triple for a 37-35 Toro lead, an advantage they would hold the rest of the game.

Cal Poly Pomona managed to tie the game thrice over the next five minutes, but 5 points by Marcquintice Davis and clutch free throw shooting over the final 2:13 in which CSUDH drained 8-of-10, including all six Cawthorne makes, proved the difference in the comeback win.

Although both teams struggled from the field (CSUDH - 33.3%; CPP - 30.4%), the Toros emerged from behind the arc making 8-of-14 shots compared to just 5-of-22 for the hosts.  Additionally, CSUDH enjoyed 8 less turnovers than the Broncos, accounting for a significant 20-7 points off turnovers cushion for the Toros.

Aguilar added 10 points and 4 boards in his first 16 minutes of the year, while McLaurin's 9 and Robert Willhite's 7 points aided the Toro cause.

Austin Swift was the lone Bronco in double-figure scoring, notching all 10 of his points in the first half of play as CPP dropped it second-consecutive contest in falling to 7-4, 5-3 CCAA.

The road trip doesn't get any easier for the Toros, now 5-8, 5-3 CCAA, as they travel to perennial power Cal State San Bernardino tomorrow night, one night after the Coyotes man-handled Cal State L.A. in a 76-62 win.
