Mike Piechota's Heady Play Gives National Champions 1-0 Win Over Chico State

Box Score
CARSON -- Sophomore Mike Piechota used his entire 5'9" frame to retrieve a cross inside visiting Chico State's box, and headed his shot over the Wildcat's leaping keeper and into the top of the net to give Cal State Dominguez Hills a hard-fought 1-0 win over CSUC on a warm Sunday afternoon.

The Toros dominated play from first kick, taking a 9-2 shot advantage in the opening stanza but unable to find the back of the net resulting in a scoreless game entering intermission.

After the break, CSUDH continued its torrid attack, out-shooting the visitors 10-2 in the frame.  The Toros would finally break through in the 61st minute after John Sherman sent a cross which Piechota timed perfectly, spearing his header up and over the outstretched arms of Wildcat keeper Michael Keohane for the game's only score.

Sherman nearly duplicated his effort with Greg Piechota minutes later, but the twin brother's header sailed six inches over the crossbar.

The Toros finished with a 19-4 edge in shots, though the Wildcats netted a 5-4 advantage in corners.

Keohane finished with 5 saves for the Wildcats, who fell to 6-3-2, 3-2-2 CCAA, while Toro counterpart Markus Dickerson tallied 1 save in the shutout win.

Junior Diego Turoldo had an outstanding game in the midfield, thwarting numerous Chico State advances.

CSUDH, now 6-3-1, 5-2-1 CCAA, takes to the road for four-consecutive CCAA contests, before returning home on October 16 to host UC San Diego.
