Toros Blast Their Way to 9-4 Weekend Win With Four Home Runs Over Chico State

Box Score Carson, CA -- Going 3-3 on the day and blasting a cool two home runs, Jon Alia proved himself worthy of the nickname 'Big John' as he propelled the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team to a 9-4 victory over the Wildcats of Chico State to close out the series 3-1. Not to be outdone from the mound, Kody Kurowski picked up his fourth win of the season after grabbing his first season save in yesterday's nightcap.

Using the gusting winds to their advantage in only the first frame of the game, Andrew Baslow made quick work of getting the Toros on the board as an opposite field blast landed just fair, giving the speedster a triple. After Kevin Pillar took an intentional walk, Alia made the Wildcats pay with his eighth home run of the season on the first pitch, a deep ball over the dead center field fence.

The 'Cats added two of their own in the fourth and cut the 4-0 Toro lead in half after a Deven Braden triple brought home Cody Dee and Bret Ringer.

The Toros replied in their fourth inning at-bat with two runs, only to give the Cats a run apiece in the fifth and sixth.

Ahead 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Pillar made it 7-4 after taking a 2-1 offering deep over the fence for his second home run of the season. Alia then matched Pillar's power with his second jack of the day, improving the Toro lead to 8-4.

Not quite finished with his swings either, Baslow would end the scoring for CSUDH in the eighth with his own home run with the 'deuces wild' (a 2-2 count, and 2 out).  In fact, Baslow was one single shy of a cycle after a double, triple and home run in his five at bats.

Leading on the day was Alia with two homers, a single and four RBI. Baslow nearly matched his teammate with a home run and two RBI while Pillar rounded out the offensive threat with a double, home run and one RBI.

Grabbing the win, Kurowski fanned three batters in six innings of duty before handing the ball to Danny Torres, who in his three innings fanned three more Wildcats to pick up his first save of the season.

Overall the Toros blasted four home runs, 13 hits and brought home eight RBIs in their 34 at-bats while Chico tallied 12 hits and four RBI in their 38 at-bats.

Now with a 16-13 overall record (11-9 CCAA) and the 3-1 series win, the Toros have taken three games from Chico for the first time in the program's history after a 12-game losing streak that stretched back to 1996.

CSUDH will next see action as they travel to Cal State L.A. for conference play on Thursday, March 26, with the single game set for 3:00pm.
