Toros Hold On Tight to Take 5-4 Win Over Vanguard University

Box Score
Costa Mesa, CA -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 non-conference win over Vanguard University today. Key in the action was Matt Phillips who picked up his first win of the season in his four innings of duty and now stands at a 1-0 mark. Candelario Flores was the go-to man from the plate with a perfect 4-4 batting clip.

Flores would get the hits going first for the Toros in the first frame off a sharp single through the right side that would advance Carlos Leyva into scoring position on third. Leyva would then safely see home following a Jon Alia hit which also advanced Flores to third and the subsequent second notch on the board. Luis Perez rounded out the RBIs for CSUDH in the first with a single through the left that would bring home Alia.

Phillips, who started pitching duties for the Toros would keep the Lions silent for his four innings of work as he went on to fan two of his 15 batters faced.

The seventh inning ended scoring for the Toros as again Flores would knock a single and eventually be brought home by a Kevin Pillar single.

After putting another on the board in the third off a Flores single and Alia double, the Toros
apparently looked towards the win, however the Lions were able to get their game going late in the seventh following a Jacob Wood triple into the depths of right center field which would bring home two for VU.

Though giving two more to the Lions in the eight, the Toros were able to hold on to their 5-4 lead under the guidance of Paul-Michael Klingsberg who was able to shut down VU with the tying run on third, earning him his second save of the season.

Going 4-4 on the day and scoring three runs, the obvious leader in offense was Flores. Amazingly all but one of his singles would result in a run for CSUDH. Other leaders included Klingsberg (2-4, 1 RBI) and Alia (1-4, 2 RBI, 1 Double).

The Toros would see a total of six pitchers in action today with the win going to starter Phillips who allowed only one hit and no runs in his four frames of action. Coming for his ninth inning usual action, Klingsberg picked up the save after allowing only one hit and fanning one of his batters.

Overall, CSUDH held the Lions to only six hits while banging out 13 of their own, two of them doubles.

Now with a record of 13-12 (8-8 CCAA), the Toros will restart conference action as they host the Chico State Wildcats this weekend for a four-game series. The first game is set on Friday, March 20 with first pitch at 3:00pm.
