Toros Come Close But Can't Drown Visiting Tritons in 69-63 Loss

Carson, CA -- What a difference 112 miles makes.  One night after a powerhouse defeat of Cal State L.A., the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team dropped a close 69-63 game against still undefeated and No. 12-ranked UC San Diego. Leading on the night was Neka Mixon with 23 points and 11 boards, while Brittney Blankenship made an offensive comeback to score 14 herself.

Though dropping behind early after tip-off, CSUDH kept close throughout the first to put constant pressure on the Tritons, trailing 12-9 four minutes in due to the efforts of Mixon and Blankenship.

The Tritons first grabbed a double-digit lead at 22-12 when a Leilani Martin jumper put them there halfway through the first. UCSD would go on to build its lead to 15 points but the Toros got their break with a minute to go as another Mixon layup off a Kayla Montalvo feed brought the Toros to within eight at 37-29.

Entering the break down 40-29, head coach Van Girard turned his team's momentum around in the second to guide CSUDH to within six, aided by two charity shots from Aujanee Baldwin for a score of 41-35.

Though never grabbing a lead, Sherrie Hughes gave the Toros an even score at 49-all halfway through the second following her own steal to start a move that would keep the deficit to single-digits the rest of the game.

Hughes would once again see to it that the game stay close when with a minute-and-a-half remaining, a drained shot from the paint would bring the Toros to only a one point deficit at 58-57.

The rest of the game was close but not quite close enough as four final Triton free throws put the final score at 69-63, securing San Diego's undefeated status in the CCAA.

Leading on the night with yet another double-double and five assists away from a triple-double was Mixon with 23 points and 11 boards. Blankenship tallied 14 points and seven rebounds while MacKenzie Mathias gave in an additional six points.

Now with a record of 13-8 (8-6 CCAA), the Toros will look to next week to see if their weekend split can keep them in the top of the NCAA West Region rankings. They will next see action on Friday, February 13 as they travel to Cal State Monterey Bay. Tip-off is set at 5:30 pm.
