'Saint' Nick Delivers Early Present to Toros in 70-63 Win Over St. Martin's

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team celebrated the holidays early, grabbing a decisive 70-63 win over the Saints of St. Martin's University, two days before Christmas.  One of three double-digit scorers, Brandie McCann was dominant in the paint, tallying 19 points and four assists.

In a game in which neither team kept the ball on the floor long, the Toros made 13 assists in 24 field goals while the Saints grabbed 16 in 22 highlighting the exceptional passing from both teams.

The game saw the lead change hands 15 times with the Toros grabbing the advantage a total of eight.

A healthy and ready bench was the deciding factor for CSUDH, 32 of its points were scored fresh off substitutions while the Saints grabbed only eight from the bench.

CSUDH first grabbed a lead five-minutes into the contest following a McCann feed to Gillian Griffin to bring the score to 10-9.

Kayla Montalvo gave the Toros a trey at the end of the first to send them into the break with a 34-29 lead.

Down by two with 3:11 left in the game, McCann tallied six points, while the Saints would grab only two by way of a Krissy Bassett jump before the buzzer rang with a final mark of 70-63.

Although finishing with 19 points on the day, McCann was bested by the Saint's Dara Zack who tallied 25 with six boards.

Two other Toros tallied double-digit points, Whitney Gantt with 13 and MacKenzie Mathias with 12.

Adding to CSUDH's 32 total rebounds, Barbara Houston grabbed a team-high of seven with SMU's Bassett doing the same to add to her team toal of 30.

The win snaps a six-game losing streak for the Toros and improves their record to 2-6 overall.  CSUDH will next see action as they host CCAA newcomer Cal State East Bay on January 2 in the new year.  Tip-off is slated for 1:00pm.
