Marinez Sends Toros to CCAA Championship Game With 2-1 Win Over CS San Bernardino

Defending Champs Face Nemesis Sonoma State for CCAA Crown on Sunday

Box Score
TURLOCK, Calif. -- Taking only three shots the entire 90 minutes of play, Andrew Marinez made sure his last counted as a perfectly placed head flick lifted the Toros to a 2-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the semifinal game of the CCAA Soccer Championships.

The Toros will now face CCAA North Division winner and 4th-seed Sonoma State, which upset top-seeded Cal State L.A. 1-0 in the nightcap.

Barely allowing the action to flow onto their side of the pitch in the first half, the Toros pressured the Coyotes with nine total shots, four on goal and two chances from the corner.

Tallying an impressive five shots in the first, Alex Munoz started the CSUDH offense 14 minutes into the first, grabbing a Marinez deflection at the top of the box, sending his ensuing blast towards San Bernardino keeper Arath De La Rocha.

Ten minutes later, Munoz looked for a repeat, sending a blast from the top of the box toward the Coyote keep yet again.

CSUSB managed only four shots in the first, but its defense helped keep the Toros off the board as the two teams entered the break scoreless.

That is where the score remained until the 70th minute when CSUSB's Obi Agwu collected a loose cross inside the box, barely scooting his kick past the Toros' Markus Dickerson who was forced to make only two saves the entire night.

Five minutes later the duo of Marinez and Greg Piechota knotted the equalizer with Marinez serving a perfect pass from the outside line to Piechota, who made sure his ball zipped easily into the right side of the Coyotes' net.

Marinez once again came through in the clutch to grab the game for the Toros. With 0:41 left in regulation, Marinez flicked a loose air ball from the top of the box through the scuttle to give CSUDH its second and final goal of the game.

The Toros never once gave up the offensive edge, tallying 24 hots the entire game, 15 alone in the first half, a good note for head coach Joe Flanagan.

"We had some good, clear chances early on that we should have scored, but when we got down a goal we kept playing and doing what we were doing and finally put them away."

The win avenged two regular season losses to the Coyotes, an even better note on the night for coach Flanagan.

"We played with energy tonight throughout the entire game.  That might have been one of the better games we've played all season in terms of creating clear chances."

Carrying a 15-5-1 season mark, the Toros will go into the CCAA Championship final contest on Sunday against the Seawolves, whose 2-0 loss to the Toros in Rohnert Park began CSUDH's current win streak.
