Top-Ranked Fort Lewis Dethrones Defending National Champs in 1-0 Win

Box Score
DURANGO, Colo. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team saw a 12-game streak come to an end as the No. 1 Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College ended the Toros' playoff run with a 1-0 loss, ending the season on a 18-6-1 mark.

"The first half we didn't really get into much of a flow, but in the second half we started connecting and getting them on their heels, and making chances but those chances didn't go in," said head coach Joe Flanagan, after the game.  "The boys really started playing hard the second half but it just wasn't our day.

"Obviously I am extremely proud of what we did all year," Flanagan continued.  "We were on life support at one point at 6-5, and to win 12 straight to have a chance to get back to the Final Four is pretty great.  The boys played great and came together at the right time."

FLC controlled the pitch from the beginning, tallying three shots in the first half. The Toros stepped up their energy late in the frame, grabbing four shots before going into the break.

The board remained at zeros 60-minutes in when Skyhawk Tom Settle shot a feed to Eaun Purcell at the top of the box to give FLC a 1-0 lead.

Needing to regroup to get back into the contest, CSUDH tallied nine shots in the second half, five of them on frame.

The Toros saw their biggest chance of the game slip away as FLC keeper Zan Wells dove to stop a Kevin Gallaugher penalty kick attempt at the 65-minute mark, the first time in Gallaugher's career a PK attempt has been stoned.

Fourteen minutes later, Marco Pulido sent a blast at Wells, but the keeper was up to the task, keeping the Toros off the board.

One minute later, Scott Mariano grabbed a feed at the top corner of the box, sending his shot inches over the top cross, keeping the score at 1-0.

The Toros ended the day with six different players with at least one shot on goal, led by all-tournament selection Greg Piechota with two total shots. Mariano and Alex Munoz# contributed with two more shots apiece.

In frame, Markus Dickerson faced only three shots on goal, making two saves.

The loss ends the season for the Toros on an 18-6-1 overall clip, marking the 13th year in a row that head coach Joe Flanagan has recorded 10+ wins. This is also the 11th straight season, CSUDH has seen play in the NCAA postseason.

"Fort Lewis is a solid team, and on a day I thought we would win, they took it," concludes Flanagan.  "But we put it all out on the field, which is all I could ask for."
