Volleyball Inks Chelsea Thayer in Preparation of 2009-10 Season

Chelsea Thayer signs her National Letter of Intent from her home in Shingle Springs, Calif.
Shingle Springs, CA -- After searching across the United States for a place to call home after high school, Ponderosa High senior Chelsea Thayer signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) from her home in Shingle Springs, Calif., and committed to joining the Toros Volleyball squad in the 2009-10 season.

Thayer, a 6-2 middle blocker with 4 years of experience through the high school and club levels, was recruited by head coach Scott Davenport for her "strong work ethic that will compliment the strong core of young players that we currently have on our squad."

After looking everywhere from California to South Carolina for a place to play in an effort to take her career to the next level, Thayer visited Cal State Dominguez Hills and felt it was the right fit.  She says "It was gorgeous and I just fell in love with the place and the people."

Also recruited from powerhouse California schools such as UC San Diego, San Diego State, Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly Pomona, Thayer accepted a half athletic and half academic scholarship at CSUDH to become a Toro.  While in the CCAA she will face-off against ex-Bruin MaKenzie Snyder, who currently plays for Chico State.

With only four years of experience under her belt, Thayer quickly developed a strong understanding of the game and was awarded Most Improved player her freshman year at Ponderosa High. She quickly improved and amassed 56 kills, 14 blocks and led the team with 24 service aces as a senior.

She also added to her experience playing with City Beach in the Bay Area on a 17s team that went to the Junior Olympics and placed eighth in the National Division.

"I'm super excited to move on and play at a whole other level. I have to give my dad and mom a lot of credit because they've been there the whole way," Thayer says, excitedly.  "It's nice to be done with high school but I'll miss playing for Pondo because it was so much fun."
