Los Angeles, CA -- Balance dictated the Toros' 5-3 win at Cal State L.A. this afternoon as MaKenzie Pedrotti's two goals led four different Toros who found the back of the net, while four different Toros also tallied assists as CSUDH evened its conference record at 2-2. Overall, CSUDH improved to 4-5.
Sunday's wild affair was quite a departure from the Golden Eagles' first six matches of the season. Cal State L.A. had scored only one goal in its first six contests, but the Golden Eagles had also allowed only five goals in their six meetings.
Janet De La O scored a pair of goals for the Golden Eagles, while Liz Franco scored the other. Khadijah Greenwood had a pair of assists for the Golden Eagles.
Alyssa Congdon had nine saves in goal for Cal State Dominguez Hills, while Cal State L.A. goalies Heather Emswiler and Katherine Miles combined to make six saves.
The game started ominously for the Golden Eagles when the Toros were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box just 3:44 into the contest. DeSalvo converted to make it 1-0.
The Toros struck again just 1:13 later when Pedrotti scored the first of her two goals with an assist from
Yvonne Vasquez.
The Golden Eagles cut it to 2-1 when Franco received a perfect pass from Greenwood, split the defense and sent in a strong shot that beat Congdon for her first goal of the season.
Congdon then made several saves to keep the Toros ahead and Cal State Dominguez Hills got a big goal from Moreno to make it 3-1 late in the first half. Shoemaker had the assist.
The Toros made it 4-1 early in the second half when Pedrotti scored her second goal of the game with an assist for Moreno.
Cal State L.A. cut the gap to 4-2 when De La O received a nice pass from defender Christine Duff and made a nice move to get a shot past Congdon in the 74th minute.
The Toros, though, countered in the 80
th minute when a corner kick by
Jessica Murphy was chased down by Shoemaker, who then scored from a sharp angle. De La O completed the scoring in the 85
th minute when a pass from Jasmine Wallace was touched by Greenwood to De La O, who outfought a defender for the ball and lofted a shot into the goal.
Cal State Dominguez Hills enjoyed a 21-18 edge in shots, while Cal State L.A. held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
CSUDH looks for its second consecutive win when Cal State San Bernardino visits Toro Stadium on Friday, September 26, with first kick set for 7:00 pm.
