Box Score Box Score

Carson, CA - Matt Phillips come out of the pen and struck out 10 batters in just 5.1 innings on the mound, and freshman Kevin Pillar roped a two out, two RBI single in the 8th to put the Toros ahead for good as CSUDH took down Cal State Stanislaus in the series opener, 7-6.  With the win CSUDH extends its CCAA winning streak to five games and improves to 18-25, 14-11 CCAA, while CSUS falls to 25-14, 17-8 CCAA.

The Warriors jumped all over the Toros early, scoring four runs in the first four innings while CSUS starter Andrew Stueve held the Toros to two hits over the first five innings.

CSUDH finally got to Stueve in the bottom of the 6th when, after back-to-back singles by Candelario Flores and Daniel Hartman, Cody Puckett drove the first pitch he saw to left for the first Toro run of the game.

The Toros added two more runs in the inning to cut the deficit to just one at 4-3, and in bottom of the 7th with two outs and a runner on, the comeback was completed as Flores launched a 2-1 pitch to right field for his third bomb of the season.

The Warriors showed their comeback ability in their next at bat as, after Adam Fonville led off with a double to left center, Leandro Dottavio laid down a bunt single.

After a walk loaded the bases, Kyle Loretelli singled up the middle to bring home a pair of runners and put CSUS back ahead, 6-5.

Puckett led off the bottom of the 8th by being hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second.

With two outs, Carlos Leyva hit a sharp ground ball to short that was misplayed, allowing him to reach base and move Puckett to third.

Leyva swiped second without a throw and Pillar then took a 2-1 offering and completed the Toros' second comeback of the day with a two-RBI single up the middle.

CSUS had one last gasp in the top of the 9th when Jake Oketani tripled to right center to start the inning, but Toros head coach Murphy Su'a called for senior lefty David Leyva out of the pen, and Leyva responded by getting the final two outs for his first save of the year.

After allowing a run to score in the 4th, Phillips found his groove in the 5th, fanning eight of the next 10 batters, including six in a row to pick up the win in relief.  He tossed 90 pitches over 5.1 innings, striking out 10 while allowing two runs on four hits.

At the plate Flores and Pillar each went 2-4 with two RBIs, with the latter stealing two bases.

The two teams battle twice tomorrow, Saturday, April 12, with the twinbill slated for an 11:00 am start on  Toro Field.
