Toros Volleyball Assists Digs 4 Kids With Olympic Gold Medalist Eric Fonoimoana

Carson, CA - The members of the Toros Volleyball team hooked up with Olympic Gold Medalist Eric Fonoimoana for the second-consecutive year to lend a hand to the “Digs 4 Kids” program at Carson High School, reaching out to third and fifth grade youth in the community.

For seven consecutive weeks, members of the CSUDH volleyball team took time off from their spring conditioning to support the “Digs 4 Kids” program, which was founded in 2000 by Professional Beach Volleyball Player and Olympic Gold Medalist, Eric Fonoimoana.

“It is really great to help young kids develop goals and help them realize what they want to do when they grow up,” begins Ashley Clark, a member of the Toros volleyball team.  “For me this has been a great experience working with the kids because I am planning on becoming a teacher, and it gives me some first-hand experience at working with young kids.”

Over the past few months the Toros spent time in the classroom helping the kids with school work and teaching them the fundamentals of volleyball, along with answering questions about college and just taking time to mentor kids in the surrounding community.

“I did it last year, but this year I feel like it was more rewarding because the kids were more eager to learn about volleyball and college,” states SAAC president and volleyball member Travette Pettigrew.  “It was amazing to see the growth in the program from last year to this year.  The sense of fulfillment that I have gotten every time I am there can't be explained, and I hope that more programs like this one can be created for other sports.”

“Digging Education” is the primary activity of D4K, and is an innovative project that combines afterschool volleyball lessons with academic mentoring and tutoring.  Students receive tutoring, mentoring, and life-lesson counseling, and then participate in volleyball instruction and training.  The program, which takes place from 3pm to 6pm, responds to a need for positive afterschool activity when many kids are unsupervised and prone to involvement in dangerous or illegal activity.
